Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, Holyoke, MA

So last summer I visited Philadelphia to go to the King of Prussia Mall and on the way down I visited some malls. Holyoke Mall is one of those malls.

Holyoke Mall began life 40 years ago in 1979 serving the Springfield, Massachusetts area.

Specifically Western Massachusetts. Holyoke Mall opened with a G. Fox, JCPenney, Sears, Service Merchandise, and Steiger’s as anchors. In the 90’s the mall renovated slightly and expanded. With this expansion G. Fox relocated. At the time of the expansion Holyoke Mall was the biggest mall in New England. The same time of the expansion Lord & Taylor decided to open a store in the mall near the food court, Lord & Taylor opened in November, 1993. In 1998 Pyramid made an attempt to build a cinema but it was blocked by the city. Lord & Taylor closed in 2005 due to the local market. In August,2007 Apple opened their first store and only store in Western Massachusetts. The next year Sephora and Pottery Barn opened stores. In 2016 Sports Authority closed due to bankruptcy. Babies R Us closed in March of 2018.

In August of that same years Sears announced that they would be closing the Holyoke store.

I think that this is a very nice mall but just like every mall in the United States you have to stay relevant and Holyoke Mall has done that. I have visited a few Pyramid malls and I will say Pyramid is EXCELLENT at making their centers relevant. Especially in Holyoke’s trade area they have damaged many of the malls in this area such as Eastfield Mall, Enfield Square, and Tower Square. It hasn’t however hurt Hampshire Mall up north because that is a Pyramid mall.

This is a huge mall with 150 stores and spanning 1.6 million square feet it is the second largest mall in New England. Holyoke also has many Western Massachusetts exclusivities such as Apple, Pottery Barn, Forever 21, and Sephora. In 2015 the mall underwent a renovation including new floors and benches..

Swansea Mall, Swansea, MA

Why do I keep visiting malls on the brink of closure? Either way here’s the Swansea Mall just east of Providence. This was once the premier shopping mall in Providence so let’s see how it fell. Swansea Mall opened with two anchors Sears and Edgar Department Store which was founded in Brockton, MA. Swansea Mall got two more anchors from an expansion in 1980 Caldor and Rhode Island’s Apex. In 1089 the mall had a major renovation the cinema was removed. Edgar’s left the mall and Boston based Jordan Marsh. The mall’s logo was changed to what it was when it closed. In 1996 Jordan Marsh closed all their stores and were converted into a Macy’s. The Caldor stores had a fire in their store in 1997. Many restaurants left in the 90’s and that is where I think the decline started. In 1995 the mall opened a food court at the Caldor end of the mall. Walpole Mall, Walpole, MA

Walpole Mall is a strange sad little mall just south of Boston that if you drove by you would just think it is a busy plaza but you would be extremely wrong. Since the interior of the mall is so small and forgotten the mall doesn’t have much written history but here is what I know. Walpole Mall opened in the 70’s with a Bradlee’s and is a dumbell type of mall which is pretty common in New England. In 1997 the mall was given a facelift which is not what it looks like now but in this renovation they added many big box stores. In 1998 the mall was given one of New England first Old Navy’s which is really funny that it was here because now they are in what feels like every mall around here. Around the recession the mall was given another renovation which was pointless because since the recession this place has lost all of the national brands on the inside and has even been de-malled a all the way from Kohl’s to the former Old Country Buffet. Woburn Mall, Woburn, MA

Woburn Mall was a a small mall in the shadows of the large Burlington Mall. The mall was never busy on the inside. You’d think by looking at the parking lot it was packed inside because the parking lot is small and the big tenants are right at the mall entrance like Market Basket, and TJ Maxx. There really isn’t much history on this mall because of it size I’m thinking. I am guessing that the mall was built in the early to mid 70’s. The mall was renovated which is honestly shocking in 2004. The Frabric Place which was the anchor in Center Court closed in 2008. The mall had a strange tenant mix. They had many discount oriented shops but not really regular mall chains. They really wanted this to be a place that you could go to and get your groceries, shoes, and takeout at Uno’s. They did have some chains but it wasn’t special. Some of the chains were Talbots Outlet Store, Payless ShoeSource, and GNC. They had a Sports Authority just like many of the dead malls in the area.
