Hanover Mall, Hanover, MA


Give me two more posts after this one and the dead malls will take a chill pill and then all the malls will be upscale or somewhat.

Hanover Mall was a mall in Hanover, Massachusetts which is a suburb of Boston. Currently the mall is getting demolished for a new shopping center called Hanover Crossing. I visited the mall twice one when I was a little kid and one other time one year and roughly 5 months before it’s closure and demolition.


Hanover Mall opened 1971 with four anchors Woolworth, Zayre, and Almy’s Sears was added onto the mall at a later date, which was at the mall just about till closure. Almy’s closed in 1987 and became Filene’s. Zayre became Ames after the two merged in 1989. Jordan Marsh closed in 1996 and became Macy’s. Macy’s was later torn down to make way for JCPenney and more shops. Filene’s expanded their store at the mall and the food court shut down and became Old Navy.

In 2002 Ames closed all their stores including the Hanover one. By fall of 2004 Walmart opened in that space. In January 2015 JCPenney closed their store and 39 others including the one at Providence Place. They were the first anchor to go. After their closure many stores left including Aéropostale, Hot Topic, PacSun, and Journey’s. Surprisingly the JCPenney became an Event Center that housed SouthCoast ComicCon. Now let’s talks about the demise. In December, 2016 the mall was bought by PECO Real Estate who announced a redevelopment almost instantly. On September 5, 2019 the preparations really kicked in and Sears announced they would be closing on December 15, 2019. On October 5, 2019 Walmart announced that they would be closing which I thought was strange that Walmart closed because they definitely would kept the space. At this point they were down to less than 54 stores like the website says. Most of the mall staples have left like Kay Jewelers, Claires, Bath & Body Works, and Yankee Candle. The stores that were left were just closing overnight because the mall’s owners didn’t ever say a closing date. The mall closed in January, 2020 and is currently being demolished.

I think this mall had a closure in mind for almost ten years because when I visited as a kid there was signs of a dead mall. I also think that the South Shore of Massachusetts is overmalled. I mean with three malls that are generally doing well South Shore Plaza, Kingston Collection, and Westgate Mall. Two malls have closed already this year on the South Shore Silver City Galleria and this. Also usually when a mall is bought for redevelopment purposes the mall usually is open for four years after the sale that how it was here, Arsenal Mall, and Woburn Mall.

Why do I keep visiting malls on the brink of closure? Either way here’s the Swansea Mall just east of Providence. This was once the premier shopping mall in Providence so let’s see how it fell. Walpole Mall, Walpole, MA

Walpole Mall is a strange sad little mall just south of Boston that if you drove by you would just think it is a busy plaza but you would be extremely wrong. Since the interior of the mall is so small and forgotten the mall doesn’t have much written history but here is what I know. Walpole Mall opened in the 70’s with a Bradlee’s and is a dumbell type of mall which is pretty common in New England. In 1997 the mall was given a facelift which is not what it looks like now but in this renovation they added many big box stores. In 1998 the mall was given one of New England first Old Navy’s which is really funny that it was here because now they are in what feels like every mall around here. Around the recession the mall was given another renovation which was pointless because since the recession this place has lost all of the national brands on the inside and has even been de-malled a all the way from Kohl’s to the former Old Country Buffet. Woburn Mall, Woburn, MA

Woburn Mall was a a small mall in the shadows of the large Burlington Mall. The mall was never busy on the inside. You’d think by looking at the parking lot it was packed inside because the parking lot is small and the big tenants are right at the mall entrance like Market Basket, and TJ Maxx. There really isn’t much history on this mall because of it size I’m thinking. I am guessing that the mall was built in the early to mid 70’s. The mall was renovated which is honestly shocking in 2004. The Frabric Place which was the anchor in Center Court closed in 2008. The mall had a strange tenant mix. They had many discount oriented shops but not really regular mall chains. They really wanted this to be a place that you could go to and get your groceries, shoes, and takeout at Uno’s. They did have some chains but it wasn’t special. Some of the chains were Talbots Outlet Store, Payless ShoeSource, and GNC. They had a Sports Authority just like many of the dead malls in the area.
