Philadelphia Mills, Philadelphia, PA

Since I finished all my malls in the New York City metro area its time to go to Philadelphia. It seems to be that there are many malls in this area off Philadelphia that are very close to each other; Oxford Valley Mall, Neshaminy Mall, and Philadelphia Mills. I only went because I wanted to get to NYC before it became insanely congested like it wasn’t already and visit one more mall before I went up north.

Franklin Mills opened on May 11, 1989 and was developed by the Mills Corporation who also developed Sawgrass Mills and The Shops at Riverside. When the mall opened the anchors were more of a regular mix that you would find at a mall like Holyoke Mall; they had a JCPenney, Sears, Reading China and Glass, and Phar-Mor which became Boscov’s a few years after opening and became Steve and Barry’s later on. Reading China and Glass closed and became Marshalls abd OfficeMax. Sears left the mall and became a AMC. Later on Office Max left and became a Sears Appliance Outlet. In March 2017 JCPenney announced it Philadelphia Mills closure as well as the store at King of Prussia Mall.

Philadelphia Mills has two food courts one by Walmart and one by Gap Outlet. I knew there was one by Walmart but I didn’t realize there was one by Gap because it is kind of weak. The one by Walmart has better eateries.

Franklin Mills is the mall’s original name from when it opened in 1989 and was used until September of 2014 when Simon renovated the mall and renamed to Philadelphia Mills. Philadelphia Mills is probably the most outlet like Mills mall owned by Simon and I have to Jersey Gardens and Sawgrass Milld but those were different this seemed very outlet and food based.

Walpole Mall, Walpole, MA

Walpole Mall is a strange sad little mall just south of Boston that if you drove by you would just think it is a busy plaza but you would be extremely wrong. Since the interior of the mall is so small and forgotten the mall doesn’t have much written history but here is what I know. Walpole Mall opened in the 70’s with a Bradlee’s and is a dumbell type of mall which is pretty common in New England. In 1997 the mall was given a facelift which is not what it looks like now but in this renovation they added many big box stores. In 1998 the mall was given one of New England first Old Navy’s which is really funny that it was here because now they are in what feels like every mall around here. Around the recession the mall was given another renovation which was pointless because since the recession this place has lost all of the national brands on the inside and has even been de-malled a all the way from Kohl’s to the former Old Country Buffet. Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, Holyoke, MA

So last summer I visited Philadelphia to go to the King of Prussia Mall and on the way down I visited some malls. Holyoke Mall is one of those malls. Holyoke Mall began life 40 years ago in 1979 serving the Springfield, Massachusetts area. Specifically Western Massachusetts. Holyoke Mall opened with a G. Fox, JCPenney, Sears, Service Merchandise, and Steiger’s as anchors. In the 90’s the mall renovated slightly and expanded. With this expansion G. Fox relocated. At the time of the expansion Holyoke Mall was the biggest mall in New England. The same time of the expansion Lord & Taylor decided to open a store in the mall near the food court, Lord & Taylor opened in November, 1993. In 1998 Pyramid made an attempt to build a cinema but it was blocked by the city. Lord & Taylor closed in 2005 due to the local market. The Mall at The Source, Westbury, NY

One thing real quick who EVER thought this mall would be as or nearly successful as Roosevelt Field? I hope I am not the only one that thinks this. The Mall at The Source is an infamous abandoned mall on Long Island on Old Country Road which is the same street as Roosevelt Field. The mall was basically abandoned except for a few sections like all of the lower level but the upper level was closed off The Cheesecake Factory to Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH. So I only could get into the Center Court, Saks OFF 5TH and Fortunoff Courts from downstairs and Fortunoff’s hallway to The Cheesecake Factory. The Mall at The Source is the former site of the Roosevelt Airport and the airport closed in 1961. In the 1960’s Ohrbach’s constructed a store on the property. In 1964 Fortunoff opened a store on the sode of the mall where Cheesecake Factory is today. In tge late 1980’s Alan Fortunoff planned to build Long Island Galleria which I actually like that name unlike The Mall at The Source but ...
