Billerica Mall, Billerica, MA

I know I said two more posts but this isn’t one of them. This is just a bonus post because I was looking in my camera roll of about six or seven photos of what remained of Billerica Mall in June, 2017. By the time I visited Kmart was still open and the only way to get inside Kmart was by accessing Kmart was by using their mall entrance. The store has since closed so I don’t know what has happened with the inside portion. The only reason I could believe that the interior concourse is still open is that there is a dry cleaning place and a smoke shop. If you really love vintage retaiil I guess drive down here. I wouldn’t personally but my opinion is my own.

Billerica Mall doesn’t have a really complicated history due to the fact it was built as part of a series of neighborhood malls; Mystic Mall and Woburn Mall. The mall was built in 1975 and did well till the 1990’s but large premier malls Pheasant Lane and Burlington starting taking business away from smaller malls in the area. The Billerica Flick which I’m assuming was a movie theater shut down in 1998 which is now a Dollar Tree. In 2005 Burlington Coat Factory sealed off their entrance to the mall. At this point in time the mall was doing very bad so Home Depot saw an opportunity to build a store in the mall’s space. It never happened because of a group called Billerica First in 2007. In 2009 the town gave RD Management one year to renovate the mall or else there would be a shutdown. During the renovation workers tools made a carbon monoxide, evacuating the mall and aired out. In February, 2010 the roof by Kmart collapsed temporarily shutting down the mall again. In 2011 The Shops at Billerica opened leaving only the Kmart Court open. On November 7, 2019 Sears announced this Kmart would be closing leaving the closet one in Holyoke on Hyannis.

I don’t really have anything else to say about this mall except one thing it’s seems like Kmart owned the little inside section.

Swansea Mall, Swansea, MA

Why do I keep visiting malls on the brink of closure? Either way here’s the Swansea Mall just east of Providence. This was once the premier shopping mall in Providence so let’s see how it fell. Swansea Mall opened with two anchors Sears and Edgar Department Store which was founded in Brockton, MA. Swansea Mall got two more anchors from an expansion in 1980 Caldor and Rhode Island’s Apex. In 1089 the mall had a major renovation the cinema was removed. Edgar’s left the mall and Boston based Jordan Marsh. The mall’s logo was changed to what it was when it closed. In 1996 Jordan Marsh closed all their stores and were converted into a Macy’s. The Caldor stores had a fire in their store in 1997. Many restaurants left in the 90’s and that is where I think the decline started. In 1995 the mall opened a food court at the Caldor end of the mall. Walpole Mall, Walpole, MA

Walpole Mall is a strange sad little mall just south of Boston that if you drove by you would just think it is a busy plaza but you would be extremely wrong. Since the interior of the mall is so small and forgotten the mall doesn’t have much written history but here is what I know. Walpole Mall opened in the 70’s with a Bradlee’s and is a dumbell type of mall which is pretty common in New England. In 1997 the mall was given a facelift which is not what it looks like now but in this renovation they added many big box stores. In 1998 the mall was given one of New England first Old Navy’s which is really funny that it was here because now they are in what feels like every mall around here. Around the recession the mall was given another renovation which was pointless because since the recession this place has lost all of the national brands on the inside and has even been de-malled a all the way from Kohl’s to the former Old Country Buffet. Woburn Mall, Woburn, MA

Woburn Mall was a a small mall in the shadows of the large Burlington Mall. The mall was never busy on the inside. You’d think by looking at the parking lot it was packed inside because the parking lot is small and the big tenants are right at the mall entrance like Market Basket, and TJ Maxx. There really isn’t much history on this mall because of it size I’m thinking. I am guessing that the mall was built in the early to mid 70’s. The mall was renovated which is honestly shocking in 2004. The Frabric Place which was the anchor in Center Court closed in 2008. The mall had a strange tenant mix. They had many discount oriented shops but not really regular mall chains. They really wanted this to be a place that you could go to and get your groceries, shoes, and takeout at Uno’s. They did have some chains but it wasn’t special. Some of the chains were Talbots Outlet Store, Payless ShoeSource, and GNC. They had a Sports Authority just like many of the dead malls in the area.
